Contractor gone bankrupt? How to still get your new-build home finished

A bankrupt contractor is a setback, not the end of your planning.

New build · 4 min read

Some new-build buyers arrange the whole finish with one company months in advance, pay a deposit, and then hear that the company has gone bankrupt, as happened in 2025 with the finishing company Housing Heroes. The handover date does not move. This article explains what to do first, what happens to your deposit, and how we take over the plastering and spraying without weeks of delay.

1. Check what you actually paid for

Look up the signed quote and the invoices. Was it a deposit, an instalment or the full amount? Note the date, the amount and the company name. The bankruptcy trustee will publish an address for claims on the Central Insolvency Register; file your claim there in writing. Be honest with yourself: a deposit to a bankrupt company is rarely fully refunded. Do not let that stop the rest of the planning.

2. Do not wait for the trustee before booking a new contractor

A trustee decides within weeks whether contracts are continued. In practice they almost never are for private finishing work. Your handover date is fixed, so book a new contractor now. Ask for a written confirmation that you are free to do so; a short e-mail to the trustee is enough.

3. Bring the old quote with you

The old quote lists the rooms, the square metres and the chosen finish. We use it as the basis for our quote, so you do not have to start from scratch. Where the old company was cheaper or promised more, we say so plainly. Where our package is better, we explain why.

4. What we take over

Thin-coat plaster or plastering of the walls, machine latex spraying of walls and ceilings, finishing of the attic boards, wood painting and betoncire. The standard new-build package is thin-coat plaster plus latex spraying for 25 euro per m2, with latex spraying of the ceilings from 6 euro per m2 within that package. Are several homes in your street affected? Then the stacked discount applies: up to 700 euro per home from three homes.

5. Planning around the handover

Send us the handover date. We reserve the days after it and start right after the key handover. If the handover moves, we move with it. You pay only after the work is done and you are satisfied, so you will not pay a deposit twice.

In short

File your claim, do not wait for the trustee, bring the old quote and let us take it from there. Request your quote in one minute at the top of the new-build package page or call us directly.
